Our membership cycle operates on a calendar year basis. The club does not police individual AMA member expiration dates throughout the year. The club begins its membership renewal cycle on September 1st and closes on March 31st of the following year. When club members renew their membership, that must have updated their AMA membership prior to renewing to maintain active status in the club.

3. FAA Registration process asks me to register an aircraft, but I don’t have one. What do I do?
The actual type of aircraft you register is not important. If you are asked for an aircraft to include in your inventory and you don’t yet have one, enter one that you hope to have one day. The registration number, however, must be placed on each aircraft flown under that family membership.

The Instructor also needs to know that the student is giving training serious effort and the $10.00 fee per session helps to ensure this and keeps the student focused on making progress.

10. Can anyone participate in your events?
All Flying Electron members can participate in club events and are encouraged to do so. We also ask for volunteers to help service and run our events. 11. How many members do you have?
The Flying Electrons became a club in 1960. Although membership numbers fluctuate, average count is about 125 members. We’re one of the largest and most successful clubs in Southeastern Wisconsin.

12. Can anyone come to your monthly meetings?
Yes. If you’re interested in RC and want to learn more a club meeting is a good place to get started. We hold meetings beginning in March and continue on through November where new club officers are elected.

13. How do Flight Simulators help during training?
Flight Simulators have reduced the time it takes to learn to fly by a considerable margin. It is said that one learns to fly using a flight simulator and then tests what they’ve learned at the field. Just about every member owns a flight simulator. During training, the club has a selection of flight simulators available through its lending library. After each training session at the field, you’re given a new set of maneuvers to practice using your simulator for next time. Once you’ve mastered all assigned maneuvers, you can take your pilot’s test.

14. How can I check out a Flight Simulator from the Club Library?
Simulators are provided when available to any student that makes the request. Just contact our Flight Training Coordinator and he can arrange a 60-day checkout. Use the CONTACT US nav link at the top of this page to make your request.

15. How often does flight training take place?
The frequency of training at the field is mutually agreed upon between you and your assigned Instructor. One should practice on the flight simulator daily for at least 20 minutes per day and test your progress at the field at least once per week. If you are not making progress, then you should consider increasing your practice at home to improve your progress.

16. When can I take my Pilot Certification test?
Once you’ve mastered all flight maneuvers and can complete each within a single flight, you’re ready to take your pilot test. Two Instructors will watch over your flight progress, use of audibles, and safety handling procedures. If all goes well, you’ll be upgraded to pilot status and be permitted to fly on your own anytime.

17. Do I need a Remote ID installed in my plane to fly at your airfield?
No. The Electron’s airfield is exempt from remote ID as long as all aircraft remain line-of-sight. The FAA has granted many AMA clubs FRIA status which releases clubs from the need for remote ID.

18. How long does it take to learn to fly RC?
This depends on you. Some students complete training in just a couple of weeks while others take longer. It depends greatly on the amount of simulator practice you get in and your dedication to the task. Training should not take longer than 4 to 6 weeks mastering two maneuvers each week.

19. Do you fly quad drones at your airfield?
Although we do not have a dedicated training program for quad drones, we do have an area set aside for helicopters and quads. Also, field rules have been established governing the use of drones so that both fixed wing and quads can co-exist. See our field rules for flying various types of aircraft at our field.
